Napa Interagency Rescue Team cuts the steel beams from the World Trade Center September 1, 2011, in preparation for the memorial. Personnel used rescue tools and techniques to remove concrete and cut away some steel collars.
In 2009 the NY and NJ Port Authority approved Napa to receive pieces of World Trade Center steel. These pieces of steel are offered not only to communities of the United States - they are offered to the world to show that we were all affected by this tragedy and to ensure the victims and heroes of 9/11 are never forgotten.
On one level, this Monument attests to the triumph of human dignity and affirms our unwavering commitment to our community and our nation.
But it also recognizes everyone who survived; and all of those who demonstrated such compassion and courage in the aftermath.
In the end, this memorial honors the victims of terrorism and all those who risk their lives to save others.
